The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has announced that Kerrie Kelly has stepped down as director general only months after taking up the post.
Ms Kelly, former chief executive of the Insurance Council of Australia, had succeeded Stephen Haddrill at the start of this year after moving to the UK to take up the job.
Reports suggest Ms Kelly’s departure has surprised many in the industry, as she was generally regarded as having made a good impression since her arrival.
The ABI, which said she was leaving for personal reasons and returning to Australia, said that Maggie Craig, the ABI's director of life and savings, would take over as acting head during the search for a permanent replacement.
“Although she has only been here for a short time, Kerrie has had the drive and energy to make an impact on the organisation and the industry during an important period,” said Archie Kane, the outgoing ABI chairman. “I am grateful for her contribution and wish her well in her future endeavours.”
Mr Kane, who is also executive director of insurance at Lloyds Banking Group, is being succeeded as ABI chairman by Tim Breedon, chief executive of Legal & General.
